Risk of Hypertension in Pregnancy

Clinical Study Title:
Risk of gestational hypertension in relation to folic acid supplementation during pregnancy.

Plain English Summary:
Hypertension during pregnancy is a serious disorder. This study looked at how folic acid and multivitamin supplementation affects the rate of hypertension during pregnancy. Women were interviewed after the birth of their babies, and asked about the occurrence of hypertension and their multivitamin use. About 10% of the women interviewed reported hypertension during pregnancy. Analysis of multivitamin use suggested that those women who used a multivitamin during pregnancy were less likely to develop hypertension during the pregnancy. A multivitamin then can therefore help to protect against the development of gestational hypertension.
