Vitamin K Improves Bone Formation
Clinical Study Title:
Short-term effect of vitamin K administration on prednisolone-induced
loss of bone mineral density in patients with chronic glomerulonephritis.
| Plain
English Summary: |
This
study examined the use of vitamin K to help improve
bone formation and help to reduce bone mineral density
loss. Participants in this study all had glomerulonephritis
and were taking prednisolone. Ten participants continued
to take the prednisolone alone, and the other ten
participants were given additional daily supplements
of vitamin K. The bone mineral density of all patients
was measured before, during and after the study. Those
participants who were taking the additional vitamin
D supplements during the study had less bone mineral
density loss than the other participants who were
taking prednisolone alone. This suggests that vitamin
D can be a beneficial supplement to treating arthritis.
