Vitamin K

Cystic Fibrosis.

Clinical Study Title:
Effect of vitamin K1 supplementation on vitamin K status in cystic fibrosis patients.

Plain English Summary:
People with cystic fibrosis are at risk for several other health problems, including a deficiency of vitamin K. This study looked at the utility of a vitamin K supplement for individuals with cystic fibrosis. Half of the participants were given supplements of vitamin K for a month, while the other participants had no supplements for a month. The supplementation was then switched, so participants who were getting supplements now were not, and those who had not gotten any, now were receiving supplements. The absorption of the vitamin K was examined at the beginning of the study, after one month and then again at 2 months. While taking the supplements, all participants had higher absorption of vitamin K as compared to when not taking the supplements. This also suggests that it is important for patients with cystic fibrosis to supplement their diet with a daily supplement of vitamin K.
